A major Florida-based trucking company is facing a $9 million lawsuit after federal investigators determined that improperly secured cargo shifted during transit, causing the driver to lose control of his vehicle and strike three passenger cars on Interstate 95 near Boca Raton on June 1, 2026.
The lawsuit, filed in Palm Beach County Circuit Court, names the trucking company, the cargo shipper, and the third-party logistics firm that arranged the shipment as defendants. The plaintiffs include two families whose vehicles were struck in the chain-reaction crash, as well as the estate of one victim who died from injuries sustained in the collision.
According to the complaint, the cargo — a load of industrial pipe sections — was not secured in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations. Investigators found that the load had shifted approximately 18 inches from its original position, causing the truck's center of gravity to shift and making the vehicle unstable at highway speeds.
The trucking company has denied liability, claiming the cargo was properly secured when it left the shipper's facility and that any shifting occurred due to road conditions. However, investigators noted that the company's own pre-trip inspection records showed no documentation of a cargo securement check.
Cargo securement violations are among the most preventable causes of truck accidents. Federal regulations require drivers to inspect and adjust cargo securement at specific intervals during a trip. When companies fail to follow these rules and people are killed or injured, they can be held fully accountable.
