Footage captured by a motorist on US-6 near Idaho Springs, Colorado on May 30, 2026 shows a fully loaded semi-truck traveling at dangerous speed down a steep mountain grade after losing brake pressure.
The driver, recognizing the brake failure, steered the truck into a runaway truck ramp approximately two miles down the grade, successfully stopping the vehicle without a collision. The driver was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
Colorado State Patrol investigators determined the truck's brakes had not been properly maintained and cited the trucking company for multiple federal safety violations. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has opened a compliance review of the carrier.
Brake failure is one of the leading causes of serious truck accidents. Trucking companies are legally required to maintain their vehicles to federal safety standards. When they fail to do so and someone is injured, they can be held liable.
