A tanker truck carrying approximately 8,000 gallons of flammable petroleum products caught fire on Interstate 20 near the Grandview Avenue exit in Odessa, Texas on May 29, 2026. The fire triggered a full hazmat response from Ector County emergency services and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
The driver escaped the cab before the fire spread to the tank but sustained burns to his arms and hands. He was airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock. No other motorists were injured, though several vehicles were damaged by heat and debris.
I-20 was closed in both directions for approximately 12 hours while crews extinguished the fire and conducted environmental testing on the surrounding soil and drainage areas. The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified and may open a formal investigation.
Tanker truck fires involving hazardous materials create complex liability situations involving the trucking company, the cargo owner, and potentially the truck manufacturer if a mechanical defect contributed to the fire.
